CASA Media Release - 25 November 1999
Y2K slowcoaches face action
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is to begin regulatory action against 36 aviation organisations which have failed to provide Y2K readiness information.
The air operators, maintenance organisations and aerodromes have not returned Y2K Statements of Accomplishment to CASA.
CASA asked 1879 aviation organisations to provide Y2K Statements of Accomplishment.
The Y2K Statements provide an assurance that all reasonable steps have been taken to ensure aviation safety will not be compromised by computer or equipment date rollover problems.
The 36 organisations which failed to return Y2K Statements are to be issued Show Cause Notices. A list of these organisations appears on the CASA website.
The Show Cause Notices warn the organisations they face suspension of operations over Y2K critical periods if they cannot satisfactorily demonstrate that safe operations will be maintained. The main Y2K critical period is 6pm on 31 December 1999 to 6pm on 7 January 2000. (EDST)
The Show Cause Notices give the aviation organisations until December 13 to respond to avoid a suspension of operations.
CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, says it is disappointing that a small number of aviation organisations have failed to report on their Y2K readiness.
"The good news is that 98 per cent of the aviation industry has reported it's ready to cope with the Y2K rollover period," Mr Toller says.
"Australian travellers can be very confident the aviation industry is well prepared for Y2K, with the major and regional airlines having spent hundreds of millions of dollars to beat the millennium bug.
"Airservices Australia has also completed an exhaustive Y2K program that will ensure that air traffic control systems continue to operate safely.
"The bottom line is that Australians will be able to fly without safety concerns during the millennium rollover period.
"It's unfortunate that a small number of aviation organisations will now be subject to regulatory action over Y2K readiness and I urge these operations to respond quickly to CASA's requests."
