New Sydney pilot guide

A new in-flight guide for pilots using Sydney's general aviation airports has just been released by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The Sydney Basin Visual Pilot Guide is a 76 page pilot-friendly publication available free of charge.

The Guide has been developed for private pilots flying by visual rules but will be an invaluable tool for even the most experienced pilots.

It covers operations at Bankstown, Hoxton Park and Camden airports as well as the so called 'Victor 1' Sydney coastal off-shore scenic route.

CASA's Assistant Director Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, says the full-colour Guide has a wealth of information on flying in the Sydney region.

"The stand-out feature of the Guide is the pictorial representation of the inbound and outbound routes for Bankstown, Hoxton Park and Camden airports," Mr Smith says.

"These show features along the routes, including photographs of the most important features to make visual navigation as simple as possible.

"There is also vital information on flight planning, aircraft operation, fuel calculations, using GPS, emergency procedures and aviation contacts.

"A description and a photograph of each of the three airports is included as well as information on radio calls, clearances, circuits and taxiing after landing.

"In total the Sydney Basin Visual Pilot Guide is a user-friendly package that makes flying in the Sydney area easier for both first timers and more experienced pilots.

"CASA urges all pilots who fly in and around Sydney to obtain a copy to use along-side all official operational documents."

The Sydney Basin Visual Pilot Guide is available free of charge from flying schools in the Sydney area or direct from CASA. Simply telephone CASA on 131 757 and ask for the Safety Promotion Branch.
