CASA Media Release - 21 December 1999
New strategy to lift air safety

A new strategic plan for Australian aviation safety in the next Millennium has been released by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

The latest CASA Corporate Plan sets clear and practical goals that will improve air safety, develop a more effective safety regulator and foster a more vibrant aviation industry.

The Plan's challenge is for CASA to lead the aviation community in providing Australia with a world class air safety environment which has public trust and confidence. CASA's vision for the future is 'Safe Skies For All'.

The goals for CASA are:

  • up-to-date simplified regulations aligned with international best practice;
  • a consistent approach to enforcement and encouragement of industry to accept its safety responsibility;
  • a safety-system approach to surveillance audits;
  • the timely provision of regulatory services;
  • staff with regulatory expertise and strong industry background;
  • a proactive management of information; and
  • stable leadership with a clear strategic direction for the future.

CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, says the new Plan is a blueprint for both CASA and the aviation industry.

"The Plan and its goals will have practical results in lifting safety, building a better CASA and fostering a stronger industry," Mr Toller says.

"CASA has identified ten specific areas where performance can and will be improved to deliver outcomes that will be measured. These ten areas cover industry operational issues, developments within CASA and community consultation and communications.

"One of the important outcomes will be to ensure everything CASA does is consistent, transparent and accountable.

"CASA will continue to develop as a credible and respected aviation regulatory authority both in Australia and internationally. We must make our regulations easy to follow and we must take a nationally consistent approach to those operators who chose not to follow the rules."
