Low flying safety check - Mareeba/Atherton Tableland
Thursday, 13 August 1998

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will carry out obstacle assessments and instrument approach validations on proposed landing and take-off approaches to the Mareeba Aerodrome tomorrow, 13 August.

This will involve the checking of the clearance heights above obstacles using a twin-engine Beechcraft Baron, white and two blues in colour, with registration number VH-WLC.

It will be piloted by two CASA Flying Operations Inspectors who are experienced in check flying such as that proposed for tomorrow.

The trial will extend from 10am until 2pm with flights at 500 feet or lower within 25 nautical miles of the aerodrome. The aircraft will avoid, as far as possible, flight over houses and stock.

CASA is sensitive to noise and environmental concerns associated with aircraft operations and where possible will limit the impact of these flights on the public.

These operations, in conjunction with Airservices Australia, are part of the continuing process of regulating safety for Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) approaches to aerodromes across Australia.
