CASA media release - Thursday 14 June 2007
Kimberley airport safety checks

Special safety checks are being carried out at three Kimberley aerodromes.

The aerodromes being checked are at Broome, Argyle and Cape Leveque.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is making sure instrument navigation procedures at these aerodromes continue to be safe.

Instrument navigation procedures allow qualified pilots in suitably equipped aircraft to land at night or during cloudy conditions.

The checks are part of an ongoing program of navigation and safety improvements at Australian aerodromes.

A number of low level flights in the area surrounding the aerodromes will be made in a light twin engine light aircraft.

These flights may appear to be well below normal operating altitudes.

This is necessary to make sure there are no obstacles in the airspace surrounding the aerodromes that could be a hazard to aircraft when making an instrument landing.

CASA apologies for any inconvenience caused by the low-level flying.

Safety checks will be carried out at:

Broome Saturday 16 June and Sunday 17 June
Argyle Saturday 16 June
Cape Leveque Monday 18 June

The safety checks may be delayed for a day or two if there is bad weather on the day.
