CASA media release - Wednesday 13 June 2007
Airport safety checks
Special safety checks are being carried out at 12 regional aerodromes across the nation during June 2007.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is making sure instrument navigation procedures at the aerodromes continue to be safe.
Instrument navigation procedures allow qualified pilots in suitably equipped aircraft to land at these aerodromes at night or during cloudy conditions.
The aerodrome approach path checks are part of an ongoing program of navigation and safety improvements at Australian aerodromes.
A number of low level flights in the areas surrounding the aerodromes will be made in a light twin engine light aircraft. These flights may appear to be well below normal operating altitudes.
This is necessary to make sure there are no obstacles in the airspace surrounding the aerodromes that could be a hazard to aircraft when making an instrument landing.
CASA apologies for any inconvenience caused by the low level flying.
The safety checks may be delayed for a day or two if there is bad weather on the day specified.
