CASA media release - Wednesday 13 June 2007
Tennant Creek airport safety checks

Special safety checks are being carried out at Tennant Creek aerodrome on Friday 15 June.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is making sure instrument navigation procedures at the aerodrome continue to be safe.

Instrument navigation procedures allow qualified pilots in suitably equipped aircraft to land at Tennant Creek at night or during cloudy conditions.

The checks at Tennant Creek aerodrome are part of an ongoing program of navigation and safety improvements at Australian aerodromes.

A number of low level flights in the area surrounding the aerodrome will be made in a light twin engine light aircraft on 15 June.

These flights may appear to be well below normal operating altitudes.

This is necessary to make sure there are no obstacles in the airspace surrounding the aerodrome that could be a hazard to aircraft when making an instrument landing.

CASA apologies for any inconvenience caused by the low level flying.

The safety checks may be delayed for a day or two if there is bad weather on the day.
