Australia hosts international aviation summit

Aviation safety and security throughout Asia and the Pacific is in the spotlight this week at a major international regional summit being hosted by Australia.

The heads of civil aviation organisations from 36 nations will meet on the Gold Coast to look at a range of critical issues.

Under review will be international air safety audits, the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s aviation security program, air navigation planning and regional technical cooperation.

The summit will examine the risks to safety caused by rapid aviation growth in Asia and the Pacific and the difficulties caused by new aviation technologies.

An agreement will also be signed with the United States to make it easier for Australian aviation manufacturers to export to the US.

The directors-general and senior aviation regulatory officials from 36 nations will take part in the summit.

As well as the US, nations represented include China, Thailand, Pakistan, Vietnam, India, New Zealand and Fiji.

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services and Airservices Australia are hosting the event.

This is the 42 nd Conference of Directors General of Civil Aviation, Asia and Pacific regions.

It runs from September 26 to 30 at the Surfers Paradise Marriot Hotel.

More than 200 delegates from the 36 International Civil Aviation Organisation member states in Asia and the Pacific are attending the conference.

People from Australian aviation organisations will also attend the working sessions to learn from international experience in safety and security and to bring a grass roots Australian perspective to the discussions.

The summit is held annually in member states, with Australia previously hosting the event in 1963 and 1984.
