New pilot safety forums

A new series of grassroots aviation safety forums for pilots has been launched by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Over the next 12 months CASA will hold a total of 46 local safety forums across Australia.

The new program of forums targets pilots in regional Australia and is being run in partnership with local aero clubs.

CASA provides experts in six key safety areas to speak at the forums, with the aero club choosing the most valuable topics for local pilots.

Safety issues being covered are:

  • Operations in and around controlled airspace
  • Pilot maintenance
  • Local weather
  • Fuel management
  • Aircraft weight and balance
  • Visual flight rules operations into instrument meteorological conditions.

CASA or Bureau of Meteorology experts deliver a presentation on the chosen topics, as well as engaging pilots in lively discussion about relevant issues.

Linda Pinney, acting manager Safety Promotion, says the new local safety forums offer relevant and accessible information for pilots to improve their flying skills and knowledge.

“These forums are less formal than the previous safety seminars CASA has been running, as well as being better targeted,” Ms Pinney says.

“The local aero club hosts the evening event and chooses the topics that give the most benefit to their local pilots. CASA also hosts a free BBQ for everyone attending, where lots of aviation issues can be debated and discussed.”

Forums are being held in 25 locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland during the second half of 2005, while 21 will be staged in Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory during the first half of 2006.
