New guide for flying instructors

A special new guide for flying instructors has been produced by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Every flying instructor in Australia will be given a free copy of the guide, which clearly sets out each step required in basic aeroplane flying training.

A total of 18 flying training exercises are explained in detail – from familiarisation with the aircraft to night flying.

The production of the new Flight Instructors Manual is part of a push by CASA to help the flying training industry to make practical improvements to training.

The new Flight Instructors Manual will assist Australia’s 1800 flying instructors to deliver consistent and effective training to everyone learning to fly.

Acting CASA chief executive officer, Bruce Gemmell, says CASA is making a strong commitment to supporting the flying training industry.

“Quality flying instruction is a cornerstone of aviation and an important part of improving safety right across the industry,” Mr Gemmell said.

“Both the industry and CASA need to increasingly focus on flying training as an investment in future safety.

“The new Flight Instructors Manual is a completely updated and reformatted version of the old Publication 45.”

The Flight Instructors Manual provides a guide to essential flying techniques and does not focus on particular aircraft types or equipment.

Exercises are set out in a simple format which identifies what skills are being taught to the student, the best ways to teach, pre-flight briefings and how the flying lesson should be conducted.

Advice is provided to instructors on what is expected of them and the best ways to relate to students.

CASA is seeking feedback from the flying training industry on the new Flight Instructors Manual, with the intention to modify the guide if appropriate in coming months. A final version of the guide will then be published next year.

Feedback will be co-ordinated through flying schools.
