New courses to improve flying training
A series of special flying training courses start next month as part of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s new drive to improve the quality of pilot training.
The courses will help flying training organisations to develop better training programs in line with competency-based training principles.
Chief flying instructors will be given hands-on experience in building their own flying training plans and training record systems.
This is important because competency-based training will be expanded under new regulations.
Competency-based instruction currently applies to aeroplane licence training and will in future cover the development of training programs for all flight crew licences, ratings and endorsements.
The introduction of these courses is part of a new spotlight on the flying training sector by CASA.
John Botham, of CASA’s Regulatory Reform Programme Implementation team, says the aviation industry and CASA are working together to improve the flying training sector and aviation safety overall.
“We consider competency-based training to be one of the priorities as it makes sure pilots who are entering the industry are measured against specific competency standards,” Mr Botham says
“Competency-based training also allows instructors to tailor the training they are giving students to different aircraft, which means the training becomes more specific and relevant.
“These courses will provide instructors with the opportunity to gain the highest levels of skills and aviation knowledge, which can then passed directly onto students.”
A total of 11 courses are planned across the country from 8 February.
