Trainee aircraft engineer scholarships
Special scholarships worth a total of $16,000 are now available to people training to become a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is providing the scholarships to encourage people to join the aircraft maintenance engineering industry.
CASA will provide one scholarship for each state and territory, paying successful students a thousand dollars each year for two years.
The scholarship funds can be used for professional tools, text and reference books or travel and accommodation required for formal training undertaken as part of the apprenticeship.
Kim Jones, CASA’s general manager Aviation Safety Promotion, says the scholarships offer practical support for people who are working to become a licensed aircraft maintenance engineer (LAME).
“Aircraft maintenance is a critical part of Australia’s aviation industry but too often it is seen as a low profile career option,” Mr Jones says.
“Many young people think of pursuing a career as a pilot, not enough actively consider being a LAME.
“Being involved in aircraft maintenance is a very rewarding career for people with an engineering and mechanical aptitude and everyone in Australian aviation needs to do more to sell this message.
“The scholarships are a modest contribution by CASA towards encouraging more people to take up aircraft aviation maintenance careers.”
This is the second year CASA has offered the scholarships - with six being awarded last year , along with two encouragement awards.
People training, or about to begin training, to become a LAME are being urged to obtain an application form for the scholarships. There are a number of conditions that must be met for a scholarship application to be considered.
Applications will be assessed by an expert panel made up of CASA and industry representatives. The closing date for applications is 18 December 2004.
