Launceston focus on air safety
Better air safety in Tasmania is the focus of a series of special seminars being held in Launceston this week.
Pilots, engineers and airline managers will meet to discuss aviation safety and improve their skills.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is hosting the four-day air safety summit, which will attract aviation people from across the state.
Key safety issues will be in the spotlight, including safety management, fatigue and aircraft icing.
The seminars are an important initiative to maintain and improve Tasmania's excellent air safety record.
CASA spokesman Peter Gibson says Tasmania has only 5.1 per cent of Australia's fatal aviation accidents.
"Over a decade Tasmania recorded 10 fatal air crashes, with only the ACT and the Northern Territory having a lower figure," Mr Gibson says.
"While it is pleasing the accident rate is low in Tasmania, it doesn't mean the aviation industry and CASA can be complacent.
"CASA and the industry must continue to work together to improve Tasmania's air safety record and these seminars are an essential part of that ongoing work."
Experts will help pilots and engineers to upgrade their skills and learn the latest in air safety from Australia and around the world.
Seminars are targeted at private and commercial pilots, as well as flying instructors.
A total of 10 seminars will be held over the four days, starting on Monday evening.
The venue for all the seminars is: Doherty Launceston International Hotel, 29 Cameron Street, Launceston.
