CASA Media Release - Friday 18 October 2002
Darwin air safety summit

Darwin is hosting a special three day air safety summit next week – with a focus on better safety for local airlines.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is holding a series of high level aviation safety briefings for airline owners, managers, pilots and engineers.

The summit offers a chance for the Northern Territory aviation industry to learn first-hand about a major overhaul of the air safety rules.

All NT aviation businesses will have to change-over to the new rules, with some required to make safety improvements.

CASA is advising airlines, charter operators and maintenance organisations to start learning about the new rules - which will be introduced progressively from the end of next year.

Another key focus of the summit will be improvements to safety for small airlines operating in the NT.

A day-long workshop will teach airline owners and managers new safety management skills.

While safety management has been used effectively in larger airlines, less information has been available for smaller operators on this important initiative.

CASA has designed training and education materials for smaller air operators to explain safety management systems, as well as providing practical tools for everyday use.

CASA believes safety management systems can reduce the risk of air accidents and cut the long term accident rate.

The air safety briefings run from Monday 21 October until Wednesday 23.

They are being held at the Rydges Plaza Hotel Darwin, 32 Mitchell Street.

Everyone involved in NT aviation is invited to attend.
