Mt Isa air safety summit
Mt Isa is hosting a special air safety summit this week.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is holding safety briefings in Mt Isa for pilots, engineers and aviation businesses.
Aviation safety experts will present the latest knowledge on topics such as aircraft maintenance, pilot decision-making and outback flying.
The briefings are being run on Wednesday 10 July and Thursday 11 July.
The outback flying briefing provides practical safety tips for pilots who fly in remote areas.
Issues covered include flight planning, weather, fuel availability, navigation, emergencies and search and rescue.
Pilots are told to be meticulous in their preparation for outback flying, with particular care needed in pre-flight planning to avoid problem situations.
Following simple tips such as starting outback flights as early as possible and checking on where fuel is available can minimise safety risks.
For emergency landings in sand dune country, the advice is to land along the troughs – not across the ridges.
CASA is holding the outback flying briefings as a contribution to the celebration of the Year of the Outback.
The briefings are free and open to anyone involved in the aviation industry in Mt Isa and throughout northwest Queensland.
They are being held at the Mecure Hotel, corner of Camooweal and Marion Streets, Mt Isa. Sessions run from 7pm to 9pm.
