Flight manuals get easier

Aircraft registration holders are being given easy-to understand help to complete their swap over to the new aircraft flight manuals system.

All aircraft registration holders must change-over to the new streamlined flight manuals system by 16 August this year.

The new system ends the Australian-unique way of managing flight manuals, with rules coming into line with international best practice.

More than 9000 aircraft registration holders are being sent a 30 page booklet which explains the new flight manuals system in plain English and sets out the steps to complete the change-over.

The booklet features tear out forms for information that needs to be sent to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, as well as answers to the most common questions.

CASA has also set up a free-call telephone hotline to provide more detailed information or additional help. The hotline number is 1800 113 323.

The new flight manual system simplifies procedures for aircraft registration holders and cuts CASA red tape.

CASA will no longer approve every individual aircraft flight manual or produce unique Australian manuals.

Registration holders will simply use the approved flight manual provided by the manufacturer, where that is required.

In the case of more than 270 aircraft models no flight manual is needed as the manufacturer has placed the important information on placards in the aeroplane. Aircraft in this category include a large range of Cessnas as well as some Piper, Mooney and other older aircraft.

The booklet contains a full list of the aircraft that do not require a flight manual.

CASA will keep a database of the flight manual status of every aircraft on the Australia register and master copies of each approved manual.

A flight manual contains information and instructions for pilots to operate aircraft safely, including maximum speeds, weights, engine RPM and normal and emergency procedures.
