Aviation maintenance industry urged to attend national summit

Aviation maintenance personnel around Australian are urged to attend a national conference being held next month as a forum for discussion of planned changes to safety regulations to take the industry into the new millennium.

Maintenance Conference 2002 has been organised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and will be held in Melbourne between 18 and 21 June.

The conference is taking place on the eve of the centenary of powered flight in 2003 and has a theme of "Preparing for the next 100 years".

CASA has proposed a package of regulatory changes that are aimed at reducing aviation maintenance compliance costs; increasing overseas acceptance of local aviation products, services and personnel; and, bringing Australia's regulations into line with international requirements.

The proposed changes, to be put in place early next year, affect all aircraft operators, licensed and unlicensed aircraft maintenance engineers, maintenance organisations, authorised representatives and maintenance training organisations.

The new regulations will see the introduction of competency-based national standards and proficiency benchmarking in the training and accreditation of aviation maintenance personnel.

They will also provide a framework for Australia to compete on a level playing field with overseas competitors in the aviation maintenance and manufacture industries.

CASA believes it is essential that people working in these industries are familiar with and understand the proposed changes.

Maintenance Conference 2002 represents a significant opportunity for members of the aviation maintenance industry to contribute to, discuss and develop a full appreciation of the proposed rule changes.

The conference will feature key industry speakers and a series of interactive workshops on topics that relate directly to the proposed aviation maintenance regulation changes.

The conference is being held at the Sofitel Hotel in Collins Street. More information can be found at the CASA website at www.casa.gov.au/seminars/
