Outback flying featured at Kalgoorlie aviation safety forum

Pilots and aircraft maintenance engineers in and around Kalgoorlie are urged to attend a two-day air safety forum being run by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority next week.

The Kalgoorlie air safety forum, part of CASA's 2002 national aviation safety "road show", features a special session on Outback Flying.

The Outback Flying workshop examines the challenges faced by pilots in distant or remote areas, and offers pilots' practical ways of reducing exposure to risks when they fly outside their own familiar territory.

The forum also includes sessions that present strategies for enhanced in-flight decision-making and examine ways of flying safely in adverse weather conditions.

Another session focuses on aircraft maintenance certification.

CASA General Manager, Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, said the forum is of vital interest to everyone in aviation in Kalgoorlie and its surrounds.

"It's a great opportunity for aviation people in the region to update their skills and knowledge," Mr Smith said.

"In this the "International Year of the Outback", we believe that the workshop aimed at promoting increased safety in Outback Flying is especially relevant," Mr Smith said.

Attendance at each of the workshops at the forum is free although registration is required. The workshops are scheduled to take place in the evenings between 7pm and 9.30pm

The forum is being held at the Mercure Overland Hotel, Lower Hannan Street, Kalgoorlie, on Wednesday 8 May and Thursday 9 May.

Further information about the forum can be found on the CASA website in the section on CASA's 2002 national aviation safety road show
