CASA Media Release - Saturday, 1 December 2001
WA aerial shark patrols must be safe

Surf Life Saving Western Australia’s proposal for extra aerial shark patrols has been dealt with fairly and properly by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Current aviation safety regulations require all aerial beach patrols to have the appropriate approvals from CASA.

This is to ensure that Australia’s strict aviation safety standards are met by the pilots and aircraft involved in aerial beach patrols.

These aircraft fly at low levels and can carry out tight turns over water - operations that must be done according to the appropriate safety standards.

Surf Life Saving Western Australia’s plan to use an aviation club and reimburse expenses is not relevant to the need for safety approvals.

Aerial beach patrols require CASA approvals regardless of the financial arrangements.
