Strong demand in outback for CASA's aviation safety messages

Central Australian and outback pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers and commercial air operators have registered strong interest in the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's Alice Springs "roadshow" which takes place next week.

The Alice Springs roadshow, part of CASA's 2001 national aviation safety promotion, features a two-day program of workshops and seminars to bring pilots and engineers up to speed with the very latest in aviation safety.

CASA urges everyone in commercial and general aviation in and around Alice Springs, and its outlying regions, to attend as many sessions as possible to advance their knowledge and skills.

Aviation safety experts from CASA will be in Alice Springs Monday and Tuesday next week.

Because aviation is always changing and pilots need to be constantly refreshed, the seminars and workshops will present essential new information for pilots of all levels of experience and qualification.

The Setting Your Own Standards seminar offers pilots a personal minimums checklist to help them identify risk factors and set their own standards based on their personal experience.

CASA's General Manager, Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, says most accidents and incidents in aviation occur because the pilot failed to consider some critical factor during pre-flight planning.

"Pilots who attend the seminar will be provided with and guided through an interactive CD-Rom that enables them to create their own checklist," Mr Smith said.

Other presenters at the roadshow include an aircraft maintenance engineer, who will talk about current requirements and proposed changes to basic aircraft maintenance, and an aviation medical expert who will talk about how pilots can deal with disorientation during flight.

The venue for the workshops and seminars is the Rydges Plaza Resort, Barrett Drive, Alice Springs. Details of the program can be seen on CASA's website.

All sessions are free although registration is required. Registration can be confirmed by telephone to CASA Aviation Safety Promotion on 131757 or by email to renee.hindson@casa.gov.au
