Free help to fly safer

Thousands of Australian pilots are getting a special free-of-charge guide to help them fly in greater safety.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is distributing the easy-to-read guide to most private pilots, students and instructors.

The second edition of the Visual Flight Rules Flight Guide is a 390 page book designed to be used by pilots both in-the-air and on-the-ground.

The VFR Flight Guide is an A-to-Z of everything visual flight qualified pilots need to know to fly in Australia.

Information is presented clearly and concisely so pilots can find the facts they need quickly and easily.

A total of 40,000 copies of the VFR Flight Guide have been printed, with about half being distributed free to VFR pilots with a current medical certificate, flying instructors and pilots who have passed the General Flying Progress Test.

The rest will be sold through the Airservices Australia Publications Centre.

CASA's General Manager Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, says the second edition of the guide contains the latest Aeronautical Information Publication amendments.

Mr Smith says the first edition of the VFR Flight Guide was a huge success.

"Many pilots have told us they find the simple layout and accessible information a real help when both planning and undertaking flights," Mr Smith says.

"Topics covered by the VFR Flight Guide include licensing, pilot responsibilities, rules of the air, pre-flight preparations, weather, airspace and aerodrome procedures, navigation, aerial sports and emergency procedures.

"There is also a special section for helicopter pilots which explains the differences between fixed wing and rotary wing flying and covers vital issues such as low flying and refuelling.

"The VFR Guide is colour coded into general information, pre-flight, operational and emergency sections for easy use."
