CASA wins two premier information technology awards

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has won two prestigious international information technology awards.

CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, today welcomed the awards - one from the Microsoft organisation and one from Britain's Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC) - as testimony to CASA's capability in applying advanced technologies to achieve its vision of "Safe Skies for All".

"CASA is very proud to receive such exalted acknowledgment of its efforts to develop systems that assist the aviation industry in the performance of its regulatory responsibilities," Mr Toller said.

The CASA Service Centre, which processes general aviation Air Operator Certificates and Certificates of Approval, won the Microsoft MEC2001 Global Award for the Best Use of Exchange 2000 Workflow.

The CASA Document Library on CD - a comprehensive virtual collection of Australian aviation legislation, regulations, orders, advisory publications and circulars as well as guides for visual flight pilots - won first place in ITSC's 2001 Electronic Publications Awards.

The CASA Service Centre's use of Exchange 2000 Workflow was developed in conjunction with Bay Technologies while the CASA Document Library on CD was produced in partnership with a Canberra-based company, Netimpact Publishing.

Mr Toller said the IT applications in place at the Service Centre had vastly improved CASA's efficiency in dealing with industry.

"It's a priority for CASA to simplify where we can all processes that ensure the efficient provision of regulatory services," he said.

The CASA Document Library on CD had also provided industry with significant benefits.

"Designed as a portable information tool, it was developed for use in place of the 24 volumes of printed material it documents and operators who hold the CD meet their obligations under Section 28BH of the Civil Aviation Act," Mr Toller said.

"With the price of the CD substantially less than the price of maintaining the equivalent paper library, it helps operators reduce their costs."

  • The CD is re-issued in an updated version with the latest information and regulatory changes every eight weeks.
