Focus on safety management

Safety management systems are the focus of a series of top level aviation industry briefings being held by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority next month.

CASA is featuring two renowned international experts in safety management as well as one of Australia's leading airline managers at industry meetings in five capital cities.

Professor James Reason, Professor Patrick Hudson and Bruce Byron will tell large and small airline operators the why, what and how of safety management.

Professor Reason, of Manchester University in Britain, will outline what is safety management and why all airlines must adopt the latest techniques.

Professor Hudson, of Leiden University in Holland, will explain how to create and maintain a safety culture and how it can contribute to financial success.

And Bruce Byron, Vice President Compliance at Air New Zealand/Ansett, will give a first hand account of safety management in practice in an Australian airline.

Half-day morning briefings are being held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in September.

Invitations are being extended to managers in all Australian airlines regardless of size.

CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, Mick Toller, says hundreds of airline managers are expected to attend the briefings.

Mr Toller says all three speakers will offer the aviation industry unique insights into improving safety at all levels in large and small aviation organisations.

"CASA is offering the airline industry a special chance to hear first hand the theory, practice and benefits of the world-best approach to safety management," Mr Toller says.

"We want to see every airline in Australia with viable and effective safety managements systems as soon as possible.

"Safety management is recognised as the best way to deliver safety to passengers day-in and day-out and as good for a company's bottom line."
