World safety expert visits Australia

Australia's aviation industry is to get the chance to meet one of the world's leaders in human error and safety management.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is bringing Professor James Reason to Australia to host a series of major aviation safety seminars.

Professor Reason will address seminars in five capital cities during a visit in September.

The seminars will give aviation industry people the latest advice on:

  • how to reduce exposure to risk;
  • how safety improvements can lead to increased profits; and
  • how to improve communication and productivity throughout aviation organisations.

While CASA is inviting all aviation people to the seminars, preference will be given to senior managers of air operator certificate holders and maintenance organisations.

Professor James Reason is the Professor of Psychology at the University of Manchester and is famous for the development of the so called Reason Model.

This is a model that forms the basis of successful safety programs in companies including British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Shell and British Railways. It is also used in accident investigations.

Professor Reason has researched human error and the way people and organisational processes contribute to breakdowns in complex technical environments.

In addition to working in aviation, Professor Reason has applied his research to the nuclear power generation industry, marine operations, railways, financial services and health care.

In recent years Professor Reason and his team have focused on the development of error management techniques and how people maintain safety during unexpected and threatening events.
