Western NSW pilots urged to attend Broken Hill safety seminar

Broken Hill will host a seminar on aviation safety organised by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority on Sunday night.

The seminar is part of a national Aviation Safety Promotion campaign being run by CASA in 2001.

The very latest information in aviation safety will be presented at the seminar, titled Setting Your Own Standards.

Commercial and general aviation pilots from in and around Broken Hill and the western region of NSW are urged to attend the seminar to update their knowledge and skills.

CASA's spokesman, Peter Gibson, says the seminar is of vital interest to anyone involved in aviation.

"Most accidents and incidents in aviation occur because the pilot failed to consider some critical factor during pre-flight planning," Mr Gibson says.

"The Setting Your Own Standards seminar offers pilots a personal minimums checklist that can help them identify risk factors and set their own standards based on their personal experience.

"Aviation is constantly changing so pilots need to keep to the very forefront with the latest developments."

Pilots who attend the seminar will be guided through an interactive CD-rom provided to them that enables them to create their own checklist.

The seminar will present essential new information for pilots of all levels of experience and qualification.

Aircraft maintenance engineers are also urged to attend the seminar, which is free to participants but requires registration.

An aviation expert from CASA will speak at the seminar, scheduled to take place between 7 pm and 9.30 pm at the Broken Hill Musicians' Club, 276 Crystal Street.

Registration can be lodged by email to renee.hindson@casa.gov.au or by phoning 131757. Details of the seminar can be viewed on the CASA web site.
