CASA Roadshow brings new aviation safety messages to Adelaide

South Australian pilots will be brought up to speed on the very latest developments in air safety when the Civil Aviation Safety Authority brings its air safety "roadshow" to Adelaide next week.

Adelaide is one of six strategic locations chosen for a series of roadshows being held as part of a CASA's 2001 national aviation safety promotion. The other locations are Cairns, Sydney, Alice Springs and Perth and Broome.

The Adelaide roadshow features a four-day program of aviation safety workshops and seminars.

CASA urges everyone in commercial and general aviation in and around Adelaide and throughout South Australia to attend as many sessions as they can to update their flying knowledge and skills.

Aviation safety experts from CASA will be in Adelaide from Tuesday 17 July to Saturday 21 July. Seminar dates and venues

The venue for the weekday workshops and seminars is Stamford Plaza, 150 North Terrace. On Saturday, the all-day Flight Safety Forum will be held at Adelaide Convention Centre.

Topics for discussion include pilot disorientation during flight and aircraft maintenance. Participants will also hear from a flying instructor, an accident investigator, a weather forecaster, and be briefed on avoiding problems with oil. A representative from one of the major airlines will be available to discuss job opportunities in the industry.

CASA spokesman, Peter Gibson, says aviation is constantly changing and people involved in recreational and general aviation, and commercial pilots, need to be constantly refreshed.

"The roadshow features a series of workshops and seminars that present essential new information for pilots of all levels of experience and qualification," Mr Gibson says.

"For example, most accidents and incidents in aviation occur because the pilot failed to consider some critical factor during pre-flight planning.

"The Setting Your Own Standards seminar offers pilots a pre-flight personal minimums checklist that can help them identify risk factors and set their own standards based on their personal experience."

Another session, Weather Wise, is designed to assist visual-rated pilots to recognise deteriorating weather conditions during flight and decide on a safe course of action.

All the seminars and workshops are free, although registration is required. Registration can be confirmed by telephone to CASA Aviation Safety Promotion on 131757
