CASA roadshow brings new aviation safety messages to Broome

Broome will next week host the first in a series of major aviation safety "roadshows" being held by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority in 2001 as part of a national aviation safety promotion.

Broome was chosen by CASA as one of six strategic locations around the country for the staging of the roadshows in a bid to achieve the most effective and far-reaching delivery of important new information about developments in aviation safety.

The other locations are Adelaide, Cairns, Sydney, Alice Springs and Perth. The roadshows feature a five-day program of aviation safety workshops and seminars.

CASA urges all those involved in commercial and general aviation in the northwest of Western Australia to attend as many sessions as they possibly can to update their knowledge and skills.

A team of aviation experts from CASA will be on location in Broome from Monday 25 June to Friday 29 June. The venue for the roadshow is the Cable Beach Intercontinental Resort.

CASA's Assistant Director, Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, says aviation is constantly changing and people in the industry need to be constantly refreshed.

"The roadshow features a series of workshops and seminars that present essential new information for pilots of all levels of experience and qualification," Mr Smith says.

"For example, most accidents and incidents in aviation occur because the pilot failed to consider some critical factor during pre-flight planning.

"The Setting Your Own Standards seminar offers pilots a pre-flight personal minimums checklist that can help them identify risk factors and set their own standards based on their personal experience."

The program includes a Pilot Maintenance seminar, directed at both pilots and aircraft maintenance personnel, that outlines responsibilities and proposed changes to basic pilot maintenance, the maintenance release and the daily inspection. This session includes a practical demonstration.

Another session, Weather Wise, is designed to assist visual-rated pilots to recognise deteriorating weather conditions during flight and decide on a safe course of action.

All the seminars and workshops are free, although registration is required. Registration can be confirmed by telephone to CASA Aviation Safety Promotion on 131757
