CASA Media Release - Wednesday, 18 April 2001
CASA rejects internal audit report findings

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority rejects many of the claims made in a draft internal audit report on aviation safety surveillance.

The audit report has not in fact been finalised and has never been presented to CASA's Director or the CASA Board.

The senior CASA manager who requested the audit sent the draft report back to the audit team for review.

This is a normal process, particularly in a case such as this where the audit report does not properly address the terms of reference.

A number of flaws have already been identified in the audit report. They include:

  • the report is riddled with personal interpretations and unattributed statements;
  • there is no evidence the audit was undertaken with any rigor, independence of thought or objectivity;
  • the report is virtually useless as basis for making improvements to current practices; and
  • it argues a personal belief against the surveillance approach endorsed by the Minister, CASA Board and the Australian National Audit office.

CASA does not believe the report is robust as it lacks a professional approach.

CASA regularly undertakes internal audits which are used as the basis for improvement and change within the organisation.

However, before reports are accepted by the Director, senior managers must be satisfied they have been undertaken in a professional manner and provide the basis for reform.
