Launcestion hosts major air safety seminars

Northern Tasmania's pilots and engineers are urged to take part in a special air safety promotion being held in Launceston tomorrow.

The air safety promotion offers commercial and general aviation pilots and engineers the latest information on critical operational issues.

The Launceston promotion is part of a major national air safety campaign being run in 2001 by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Aviation experts from CASA will conduct two seminars aimed at improving flight crew safety standards.

CASA's Assistant Director, Aviation Safety Promotion, Mike Smith, says the seminars are of vital interest to all in aviation.

"CASA encourages everyone in aviation in northern Tasmania to attend the seminars, to update their knowledge and skills," Mr Smith says.

"Most aviation accidents and incidents occur when critical factors in pre-flight planning are ignored or not correctly taken in to account."

The Launceston seminars, which are free, include:

  • Setting Your Own Standards (7pm-9.30pm at the Great Northern Hotel, Early St.); and,
  • Maintenance Certification (7pm-9.30pm, Launceston International Hotel, Cameron St.)

Setting Your Own Standards gives pilots a personal minimums checklist to help them identify risk factors and set their own standards based on their personal experience.

"Research has shown that problems that arise during flight are often due to the decisions made before the flight began," Mr Smith says.

The Maintenance Certification program is specifically designed for licensed aircraft maintenance engineers (LAMEs) but is of interest to pilots as well.
