New CASA Board member
The Board of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority has been strengthened and diversified with the appointment today of Air Vice Marshal Neil Smith, AM MBE (retd.).
Air Vice Marshall Smith has almost 40 years experience in the Royal Australian Air Force, where he specialised in maintenance and engineering.
Upon retirement from the RAAF in January this year, AVM Smith established, and is now principal of, Smith's Management and Consulting Pty. Ltd.
Air Vice Marshall Smith has served as Support Commander in the Air Force responsible for the strategic level of logistic support for all Australian military aircraft.
He had previously been responsible for the technical airworthiness regulation of RAAF and Army aircraft, the maintenance and improvement of processes and procedures for supply chain management and procurement, and maintenance of IT applications supporting the supply and maintenance chain.
CASA Board Chairman Dr Paul Scully-Power warmly welcomed Air Vice Marshal Smith's appointment on behalf of the Government.
Dr Scully-Power said AVM Smith's experience in both military and civil aviation brings a wide spectrum of knowledge and understanding to the CASA Board.
"AVM Smith's background, combined with a commercial pilot's licence and a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering, provide an excellent skills base to deal with the multiplicity of issues facing the CASA Board," Dr Scully-Power said.
CASA's other Board members are James Kimpton AM (Deputy Chairman), Megan Cornelius AM and Mick Toller (Director of Aviation Safety).
