Overseas Conversion Examination (PAOS)
Overview
A pass in the appropriate conversion examination is a one of the requirements for the issue of an Australian Private Pilot (Aeroplane) Licence on the basis of an equivalent overseas qualification. The examination is prepared in a multi-choice question format and is available through CASA approved flying schools.

The examination tests items of Section 3 of the Day VFR (Aeroplane) Syllabus, Issue 3.1 - 01 April 2004, as follows:

Exam Application
Application to sit the exam can be made through flying schools who have authority to conduct the examination. The pre-requisite qualification that must be presented to the supervisor for sighting is a valid PPL (aeroplane) licence (without any restriction) of an ICAO contracting State.
Material to be Supplied by the Candidate
The following reference documents must be provided by the candidate on the day of the exam:
- Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR);
- Civil Aviation Orders (CAO) parts 20-95;
- Civil Aviation Advisory Publications (CAAP) 92.1(1), 234.1, 235-1 and 235-2;
- Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP);
- En-route Supplement Australia (ERSA);
- Planning Chart (PCA);
- VFR Flight Guide (VFG).
(The Jeppesen Airways Manual may be substituted for the above documents if the candidate wishes. However, candidates using these charts do so at their own risk that the Manual may not contain the information required to answer the examination questions correctly.)
All candidates must provide their own writing implements - normal pens (biros), pencils and erasers. Calculators are permitted provided they are non-programmable and have a volatile memory
Issue of Result
Marking is carried out by CASA and the result issued and despatched by post to the candidate's listed communication address. Results cannot be released over the phone.
