Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a laptop instead?
Yes, a laptop may be used by the Supervisor with the following conditions:
- it meets all the listed requirements including that for IEv5
- the screen is at least 12.5 inch wide
- a conventional mouse can and must be attached (laptop mouse is not permitted)
- the exam session is held in a secure quiet room
- the computer remains physically connected to enable candidate's submission or automatic submission at the end of the permitted exam period (see 3rd question below)
- the keyboard of the laptop must be secured from candidate's usage by some means. This may be achieved by continuously keeping an eye on the candidate. However, if the supervisor reckons he/she cannot maintain a continuous eye on the candidate, a recommended method of rendering the keyboard unusable would be to physically disconnect the laptop from the web after download of the exam, though it must be reconnected when the candidate wishes to submit or when near the end of the permitted exam period - this action carries the inadvertent danger/mistake of preventing the automatic submission of the exam (see 3rd question below)
What is the size of an exam file?
Around 100 to 150 KB, but may be more in the future when graphics are introduced
Does the PC have to remain online all the time for the exam session?
No. The PC may be configured to disconnect from the web once the exam file has been downloaded. However, it is advisable that the system remains physically connected, as the PC will automatically attempt to reconnect when the exam session is submitted by the candidate or the time permitted for the exam expires. The system will only accept submission of an exam within the permitted time or a short period thereafter (15 minutes). Exams not submitted within the required period will be recorded as INVALID or CANCELLED., and will never be treated as a PASS.
Note that this 15 minutes allows for slow web connections or problems reconnecting. Candidates input will not be allowed after expiration of the permitted time.
Why can't I just register verbally through telephone?
As part of the registration process, CASA requires supervisors to supply an e-mail address. This address will be used for system-related communications. As a security measure, the e-mail address must be communicated in writing (via either fax or e-mail).
Additionally, CASA requires a written commitment from you because you should be aware that in Phase II of the system implementation, a credit card becomes mandatory. Also, a written registration (fax or email) provides our officer with a clearer statement of your details and equipment list - accurate recording of these are essential for us to provide you with better support.
I do not wish to use credit card at all, but still want to participate as a CO under the CyberExams system?
A condition for participation as a CO in the CyberExams system shall be the requirement for a credit card in Phase II (also see following question).
However, CASA will review/examine other methods of online payment before Phase II, but intending supervisors must work on the assumption that credit card may be the sole alternative, and thus a mandatory requirement.
Can I use EFTPOS instead of a credit card?
Instead of a credit card, you could arrange for a debit card (eg. Master Card, Visa or others) through your banking service provider linked to (one of) your account. This works exactly the same as an EFTPOS transaction (ie. you must have the money there for the transaction to be successful). This will satisfy CASA's requirement for a credit card transaction.
Can I use a MacIntosh PC?
No, because the secure browser only runs on the Windows version of Internet Explorer.
Can I print a hardcopy version for simultaneous multiple sitting?
No. The system will not permit any such printing. Besides, this will be considered as an illegal act. There will not be any manual marking facility in CASA.
The solution would be to source and rent facilities with multiple PC equipment, such as at learning institutes (Uni's, TAFE's, schools, colleges, etc) or commercial IT training organizations. CASA may authorize such facilities as temporary exam centres for the requesting supervisors. CASA reserves the right to inspect these facilities before approving them as exam centres.
