Private IFR rating examination
Introduction
A CASA examination for the Private IFR (PIFR) rating is now available on the CyberExams system. Its examination code is PIFR.
The examination can be taken as an alternative to the examination set by the CFI of an instrument flying school and covers the knowledge required for issue of the basic Private IFR rating.
Availability
The examination is available seven days a week during business hours (0800 to 1800 local). Candidates may sit by arrangement with the CFI of a flying school who has approval to supervise this examination. The CyberExams system will provide a result and a Knowledge-Deficiency Report (KDR) immediately on completion of the examination.
Cost
CASA fee for the PIFR examination is $65.
Examination syllabus
The PIFR examination is based on the Private IFR rating aeronautical knowledge syllabus contained in Appendix 1 of CAAP 5.13-1(0), as applicable to the basic Private IFR rating (units 1 to 17). This includes the material required to obtain the Flight Procedure Authorizations for navigation using NDB, VOR, DME and flight at night.
