CASA research projects

CASA support for research

CASA’s functions, amongst other things, include:

  • the development of clear and concise aviation safety standards;
  • developing effective enforcement strategies to secure compliance with aviation safety standards;
  • conducting comprehensive aviation industry surveillance;
  • conducting regular reviews of the system of civil aviation safety in order to monitor the safety performance of the aviation industry, to identify safety — related trends and risk factors and to promote the development and improvement of the system;
  • conducting regular and timely assessment of international safety developments.

CASA is always seeking ways of performing its functions better. A targeted research program is one of the vehicles that CASA can use to identify new and innovative ways of doing this and ultimately achieving better aviation safety outcomes for Australia.

Consequently, CASA is actively seeking worthwhile research projects in the field of aviation safety.

Applying for CASA research support

CASA is open to applications, or expressions of interest, from organisations or individuals who have the proven capability to carry out research in the aviation safety field.

CASA has already written to key universities inviting them to become involved.

CASA staff are also encouraged to propose research projects.

Successful project applications will:

  • support a demonstrated aviation safety need or assess the extent of a perceived problem;
  • produce practical outcomes that can be used to directly support CASA and/or the aviation industry (rather than higher level research with an outcome expected to require extensive ongoing research).
  • align with CASA’s short-medium term (1-3 years) goals & priorities.

Managing CASA’s research support

The Senior Management Research Steering Committee has been formed to coordinate CASA’s research efforts, both for:

  • research projects for which CASA may decide to commission external providers and
  • research projects that are undertaken within CASA.

In doing this, the Committee will:

  • Review and approve CASA’s research agenda based on identified knowledge gaps and emerging safety issues;
  • Establish CASA’s research priorities and confirm resource allocation for approved research initiatives.
