Functions
The CASA Office of Aviation Medicine (Avmed) develops and administers medical standards (CASR Pt 67) applicable to licence holders in air transport and general aviation operations as well as for air traffic control operations The Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) for medical fitness for licence holders are stated in Chapter 6 of Annex 1 to the Convention. Avmed also prepares associated guidance material and issues advice in relation to the above matters.
In addition, Avmed performs the following key expert roles, to support CASA’s statutory functions:
- The appointment, oversight and education of Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs).
- The provision of expert aviation medicine advice in relation to other regulatory functions such as the provision of oxygen, problematic use of substances, aircrew fatigue, and accident or incident investigations and reports.
