About CASA

CASA's Environmental Management System

CASA's uses an Environmental Management System (EMS) as defined under the standard AS/NZS ISO 1400:2004.   CASA's EMS is a tool designed to improve it's environmental performance and reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

There are five key elements in CASA's EMS.   They guide it's development and implementation and assist staff to achieve continual improvement in environmental performance.

Environmental Policy

The Policy formalises CASA's commitments to environmental protection, and provides a framework for achieving continual improvement in environmental performance. These commitments are applicable to all activities that CASA can directly control and influence.

Planning

This element involves the identification of the significant environmental aspects of CASA activities and relevant legal and other requirements, and the development of environmental objectives, targets and programs to address them.

Implementation and operations

To achieve effective implementation and reach its environmental goals, CASA must ensure that support mechanisms and capabilities are in place.

These include defining environmental roles and responsibilities, maintaining procedures covering the environmental effects of operations, providing appropriate training, and encouraging environmental awareness among staff.

Checking and Corrective Action

This element includes the ongoing evaluation of environmental performance to ensure that CASA's environmental objectives and targets and the commitments of the Environmental Policy are being achieved.

This also includes ensuring EMS records are maintained, corrective action carried out where required and EMS audits are carried out when required.

Management Review

CASA's EMS is reviewed regularly to assess it's effectiveness in achieving CASA's environmental objectives and targets, and to explore opportunities for continual improvement in environmental performance through improvements to the EMS itself. In addition to internal reviews, the CASA EMS must be periodically audited by an external body, to gain and maintain certification to AS/NZS ISO 14001.

What next?

It is CASA's goal to obtain ISO 14001 certification of it's new Head Office during 2007.

CASA subscribes to the Governments energy efficiency policy and has in place a number of environmental initiatives such as using energy efficient light fittings, timed lighting and recycling of waste.   Staff are encouraged to participate and contribute ideas towards improving CASA's environmental performance
