De Havilland Canada DHC-1 MK 22A (Chipmunk)
Since it commenced operation over 70 years ago the Royal Aero Club of WA has had a Chipmunk on it's flight line. In the early days the RACWA purchased Chippys from South Africa for basic training at Perth airport. RWI saw service in Nigeria before being restored in the UK and then shipped to Perth. The RACWA puchased it in the late 1990's.
Today there is still an element of our membership that love the nostalgia of flying what is commonly regarded as "the poor mans Spitfire" due to its outstanding handling and flying characteristics.
The chippy is used for aerobatics, formation and tailwheel endorsements and of course by those who enjoy flying such a lovely aircraft.
