Threat and Error Management

Inclusion of Threat and Error Management training into the Australian flight crew aeronautical knowledge syllabus.

In compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommendation that threat and error management (TEM) training be included in all pilot licence training, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will examine TEM as a component of the ATPL human factors examination (AHUF) from 1 July 2009 in the same manner as it will for the Day VFR syllabus (for PPL and CPL).

The TEM topics that will be examined are contained at Section seven (Human Performance and Limitations) Paragraph five, of the ATPL aeronautical knowledge syllabi for aeroplanes (Version 1.1) and helicopters (Version 3).

Examination candidates should expect approximately 10 to 15 questions will be asked on TEM, and the duration of the AHUF examination will be adjusted to accommodate the additional questions. This will also apply to the CPL HF (CHUF) examinations.

The revised ATPL Syllabus and other applicable information will be posted on the CASA website at www.casa.gov.au on Tuesday, 18 November 2008.
