Part VIII - Emergency Air Services


8.1.1 Subject to the provisions below, an operator of an emergency service shall not roster a flight crew member for duty periods longer than:

(a) Single pilot -12 hours;

(b) Two pilot -14 hours.

8.1.2 A flight crew member shall not be rostered for duty on more than seven consecutive days.

8.1.3 A flight crew member shall not be rostered for duty on more than four nights in any seven consecutive nights, where the duty period involves 'late night' operations.

8.2.1 A duty period which contains a rest period of four consecutive hours or more at suitable sleeping accommodation may be extended by up to four hours.

8.2.2 A duty period which contains a rest period of four consecutive hours or more, at suitable resting accommodation, may be extended by up to two hours.

8.3.1 A duty period already commenced may be extended by up to two hours, when it is operationally necessary in order to complete the objective of the duty and the flight member considers him/herself mentally and physically fit for the extension.

8.4.1 At the completion of rostered flight deck duties a duty period may be extended at the flight crew member's discretion to allow deadhead positioning to a suitable destination. The time spent in positioning shall be considered duty time for the purpose of determining subsequent time free of duty requirements and cumulative duty as per paragraph 8.9.

8.5.1 The operator of an emergency service may roster a flight crew member for up to ten consecutive standby periods, each period being for up to 24 hours.

8.5.2 Standby may be undertaken either at home or at suitable sleeping accommodation.

8.6.1 Subject to the provisions below, the time free of duty following a duty period shall be a minimum of ten consecutive hours. The time free of duty shall be increased by one hour for every hour or part of an hour that the preceding duty period exceeded ten hours.

8.6.2 Where the preceding duty period does not exceed 10 hours and the time free of duty includes the hours between 2200 to 0600 local time, the time free of duty may be reduced to nine consecutive hours.

8.6.3 Where a duty period exceeds 12 hours, the time free of duty may be reduced to 12 hours provided that the subsequent time free of duty is at least 36 hours.

8.6.4 A pilot on standby who does not exceed two hours of duty between 2400 and 0500, six hours of duty in any 24 hours or eight hours of duty in any 48, shall not be subject to the requirements of 8.6.1.

8.6.5 The time free of duty may start at 0600 in the case of exceeding two hours between 2400 and 0500, and shall start at the completion of the duty period in all other cases.

8.6.6 In any consecutive 14 nights, a flight crew member shall have either:

(a) two periods free of all duty, each of which is a minimum of 36 consecutive hours duration and comprising two local nights; or

(b) one period free of all duty, comprising a minimum of 60 consecutive hours and three consecutive nights;

the above periods to start no later than 2200 local, and finish not earlier than 0500 local.

The maximum rostered flight time in any duty period will be:

Instrument Flight Rules

  • with operative 3 axis auto pilot 08 hours
  • without operative 3 axis auto pilot 06 hours

Visual Flight Rules

  • Night 08 hours
  • Day 10 hours

8.8.1 The total flight time accrued in any consecutive 28 days shall not exceed 90 hours.

8.8.2 The total flight time accrued under this Part during any consecutive 365 day period shall not exceed 1000 hours.

8.9.1 Where there are more than two duty periods involving 'late night' operations in any seven consecutive nights, the cumulative duty period in that seven night period shall not exceed 40 hours.

8.9.2 The cumulative duty period in any consecutive 14 days shall not exceed 90 hours.
