Part V(A) - Single Pilot Charter, and Flying Training Operations


5.1.1 A flight crewmember shall not be rostered for duty on more than four consecutive nights where the duty period involves 'late night' operations.

5.1.2 A flight crewmember shall not be rostered for duty on more than four nights in any seven consecutive nights, where the duty period involves 'late night' operations.

5.2 Extension of Flying Duty Period by Split Duty

5.2.1 A duty period which contains a rest period of four consecutive hours or more at suitable sleeping accommodation may be extended by up to four hours, with a maximum duty of 16 hours.

5.2.2 A duty period, which contains a rest period of four consecutive hours or more, at suitable resting accommodation, may be extended by up to two hours.

5.2.3 Where the rest period encompasses any period between the hours 0100 to 0400, the rest period is to be for an uninterrupted period of at least seven hours, with a maximum duty period of 16 hours.

5.2.4 The duty period after a rest period, that is part of a split duty, shall not exceed six hours.

5.3 Extension of Duty Period

5.3.1 A duty period already commenced may be extended by up to two hours, when it is operationally necessary in order to complete the objective of the duty and the flight member considers him/herself mentally and physically fit for the extension. No such an extension shall result in a duty period exceeding 16 hours.

5.3.2 The number of duty periods extended under 5.3.1 shall not exceed 10 percent of the operator's total number of duty periods in any 28 days. No extension of duty period shall result in the limits of 5.1.1 or 5.1.2 being exceeded.

5.3.3 Where a duty period is extended under 5.3.1, the flight crewmember shall submit a report as specified in Section 3, para 3.5.

5.4 Extension of Duty Period for Positioning

5.4.1 At the completion of rostered flight deck duties, a duty period may be extended at the flight member's discretion to allow deadhead positioning to a suitable destination. The time spent in positioning shall be considered duty time for the purpose of determining subsequent time free of duty requirements and cumulative duty as per para 5.9.

5.5 Standby

5.5.1 The maximum allowable continuous time on standby is 16 hours.

5.5.2 Standby may be undertaken either at home or at suitable sleeping accommodation.

5.5.3 The maximum allowable duty period following call out from standby is to be decreased by the number of hours that the standby time exceeds 12 hours.

5.5.4 A standby completed in which call out does not occur is to be followed by a time free of all duty of at least 10 hours.

5.6 Time Free of Duty

5.6.1 Subject to the provisions below, the time free of duty shall be a minimum of 10 consecutive hours. The time free of duty shall be increased by one hour for every hour or part of an hour that the preceding duty period exceeds 10 hours.

5.6.2 Where the preceding duty period does not exceed 10 hours and the time free of duty includes the hours between 2200 to 0600 local time, the time free of duty may be reduced to nine consecutive hours.

5.6.3 Where a duty period exceeds 12 hours, the time free of duty may be reduced to 12 hours provided that the subsequent time free of duty is at least 36 hours.

5.6.4 A standby completed in which a call out does not occur is to be followed by a time free of duty of at least 10 hours.

5.6.5 In any consecutive 14 nights, a flight crewmember shall have:

(a) two periods free of all duty, each of which is a minimum of 36 consecutive hours duration and comprising two local nights; and

(b) in any consecutive 8 nights, flight crew must have one period free of all duty, which is a minimum of 36 hours duration; with the above periods to start no later than 2200 hours and finishing not earlier than 0500 hours local time.

5.7 Maximum Flight time

5.7.1 The maximum flight time in any duty period will be:

  • 8 hours for Instrument Flight Rules and Night Visual Flight Rules; and
  • 10 hours for day Visual Flight Rules.

5.8 Cumulative Limit on Flying Hours

5.8.1 The total flight time accrued in any consecutive 28 days shall not exceed 90 hours.

5.8.2 The total flight time accrued under this Part during any consecutive 365 day period shall not exceed 1000 hours.

5.9 Limit on Cumulative Duty Time

5.9.1 Where there are more than two duty periods involving ' late night' operations in any seven consecutive nights, the cumulative duty period in that seven night period shall not exceed 40 hours.

5.9.2 The cumulative duty period in any consecutive 14 days shall not exceed 90 hours.
