Aircraft descriptions on Air Operator Certificates

If you are the holder of an AOC, this page identifies how aircraft are described on an AOC and provides some guidance as to what the authorisations encompass.

For Aircraft in RPT operations
Aircraft are described by manufacturer, type, model serial number and registration mark.
For Transport Category Helicopters and Fixed wing operations >5700kg MTOW
Aircraft are described by Manufacturer, type and model.
For Non Transport Category Helicopters and Fixed wing multi engine and/or turbine powered aircraft <5700kg in charter and air work operations
Aircraft are described by manufacturer and type as a class/type authorisation.
See table of aircraft types and models (Published 6 June 2006. Updated 23 January 2007.)
For Single engine piston power aircraft in air work operations only

Aircraft are described by the statement:

Single engine land aeroplanes not exceeding 5,700 kg maximum take off weight other than:

  1. Ski landing gear, float alighting gear, floating hull or amphibious aeroplanes;
  2. Turbine powered aeroplanes;
  3. Pressurised aeroplanes;
  4. Amateur built or kit-built aeroplanes, unless permitted by the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988 (CAR) or the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 (CASR).

The table of aircraft types and models describes what aircraft models can be operated when they are described by Class and Type on the AOC. The descriptors are based on the CAO 40.1.0 and CAO 40.3.0 Class endorsements. Aircraft not included in this table are described as per the preceding paragraphs. Operators should be mindful of their responsibilities as an AOC holder in relation CAO82.1 subsection 6 when operating various models of aircraft that are authorised by the descriptors on their AOC.

Note: the exception to the above is the Airtractor 802 which is >5700kg MTOW and grouped under the Ayres Turbo PT6 as the aircraft is categorised by the Class Endorsement and the Aircraft is used in Air work operations only.

Aircraft with special design features

Aircraft models that incorporate special design features, such as float alighting gear (other than emergency flotation equipment), floating hull, pressurisation or ski landing gear are authorised as indicated in Condition 1 of schedule 4 of your AOC. Permitted and not permitted delineate between operations authorised and not authorised.

Example

Conditions relating to special design features.

Operations in aircraft listed in schedules 1, 2 and 3, which incorporate the following special design features are authorised by this AOC as indicated:

  1. Float alighting gear (other than emergency flotation equipment) – not permitted.
  2. Floating Hull – not permitted.
  3. Pressurisation – not permitted.
  4. Ski landing gear – not permitted.
