Types of AME Examinations
One of the conditions of eligibility to apply for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence is to complete examinations that relate to the type of licence category being sought. Examinations are designed to ensure that a person has the level of technical skill and legislative knowledge to hold the licence. There are five types of examinations depending on the licence category being sought.
AME licence exams
Core exams
These examinations cover theory, laws, principles and practices relating to each Category. Applicants for AME licences must understand these subjects before they can be expected to understand how aircraft systems function. Core examinations are also known as "Basic Examinations".
Specific Group
These examinations cover the theory of the generic operation of aircraft systems. They are intended to meet the needs of general aviation, and do not cover specific aircraft types or models.
Specific Type
These examinations cover a specific type of aircraft, engine or system. Specific Type aircraft and engine examinations provided by CASA are listed in AAC 9-91 to AAC 9-95 for each Category, that is airframes, electrical, engines, instruments and radio. CASA approved Specific Type courses and examinations are listed in AAC 9-4 for overseas courses and AAC 9-5 for Australian courses.
Other Exams
Category Technical Competency (CTC)
(AME Licence for ADF and overseas licence holders only)
The CTC examinations assess an applicant's knowledge and if applicable, licence ratings, so that credits can be granted for Core and Specific Group examinations. Each CTC examination applies to a particular Licence Category.
Airworthiness Authority Non-AME Licence
Airworthiness Authority examinations may be written, oral and practical tests, as appropriate to test the applicant's suitability and competency to perform the relevant type of aircraft maintenance and the circumstances in which the Airworthiness Authority is required.
NOTE: For more detailed information on AME examinations refer to Airworthiness Advisory Circular Part 9-1.
